- This set of four lectures explores the earliest stirrings of industrialization as it played out in the mill towns and machine shops of a host of Connecticut communities such as Norwich, Middletown, Waterbury, Hamden and Litchfield. Buffeted by economic crises and accelerating out-migration, entrepreneurs such as Eli Whitney, David Humphreys and many others placed Connecticut on the cutting edge of America’s industrial revolution and, in the process, reordered the state’s culture, economy and the very landscape itself.
